Online Desk

Greetings Fort Rouge Constituency Residents!

Welcome to my online desk, where I can share with you some of the wonderful things happening in our exciting community.

Fort Rouge is the place to be!

Residents in our community find interesting and innovative ways to come together and to stay active. Over the summer I was reminded of this while attending many events in our neighbourhood. I also heard from constituents on how to make Fort Rouge and Manitoba a more equitable and better place to grow as a community.

Our Government is engaged in many exciting changes reflecting our diverse population. Continued developments in health care and healthy living include further resources for mental health, legislation in schools to improve children’s nutrition, and investments in health infrastructure. ‘Street Launch’ was recently launched to support youth who have been sexually exploited or are at risk. Of particular note is the province-wide Age-Friendly Manitoba initiative which invests resources in seniors’ programs and services. Other cities around the world have adopted similar campaigns to improve the health, independence and well-being of seniors. I also continue my work around Manitoba’s Disability and Accessibility Strategy in my role as assistant to the Minister; I look forward to seeing its results in the community.

One of the things I had an opportunity to do this summer is attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new River Avenue Co-Op day Nursery (RACD) in August. RACD recently moved to an eco-friendly – and family-friendly! – building with support from government, private and non-profit sources. This event was also attended by The Honourable Gord Macintosh, Minister for Family Services and Housing, and former Fort Rouge MLA Tim Sale who was involved in this project in its beginning stages. Parents, children, and supporters all made the event a wonderful example of a community coming together and celebrating its growth.

I also want to congratulate the River Osborne Community Centre for hosting the very successful Osborne Village Community Garden . I also recognise the hard of work of the Gas Station Theatre for its crucial role in the second Village Market , our very own farmers’ market. The hard work of staff, residents and volunteers yielded successful results. I hope to see both of these projects around next summer.

The River Osborne Community Centre (ROCC) will hosted another SPIN program this Fall. This time round, it was tennis. The session was available to youth, free of charge, Check with ROCC also about family skate times and registration for winter programming.

I hope you will take some time to look through my website. You will note the many events I have had the pleasure of attending in the ‘Photos’. The ‘In the House’ section notes my contributions in the House as MLA: A special presentation to Prairie Pathfinders celebrating their 10th anniversary in September; a Private Member’s the Resolution honouring the B’Nai Brith in Manitoba on their 100th anniversary; and the launch of ‘Access Week’ which coincided with a Statement recognising the long-time disability activist Jim Derksen. Enjoy!

If you have any questions about these or other programs, please contact my office at 946-0272 or fortrouge@mts.net

Enjoy!
