Online Desk Hello Kirkfield Park! Our community is an active and vibrant place to live and work, so there is always plenty to do! Like many others in our area, I’m looking forward to the opening of the ACCESS Centre in the near future. It has been a wonderful experience working with the community during the consultation process for the new centre. With so much going on, I hope you take the time to look at the newsletters and photographs linked to this page to see just some of the things that have been happening recently in Kirkfield Park and what is planned for the future. As this website shows, I have been very busy both in the community and in the Legislature. ______________________________We are absolutely thrilled to have a variety of wonderful art pieces by local artist Charlie Johnston displayed in the constituency office. We are also honoured to display the work of local author Frances-Mary Brown at the office. Frances has written a science fiction tale set right here in the St. James area. So please come by at any time during office hours to help us enjoy these works of art and learn more about local talent! Welcome to spring! Signs of the season are all around us, including a winter's worth of rubbish along our creek banks. To welcome spring back to the neighbourhood, we are hosting the 6th annual Sturgeon Creek Clean Up at the Woodhaven Community Centre on Saturday May 8 from 12-5pm. Come help beautify the community, and enjoy a free BBQ with refreshments as well as the chance to win one of many awesome prizes donated by our local businesses. Please call the office for more details. National Youth Week is held every year from May 1-7, and this year we are celebrating our local young people by showing student art in the constituency office that whole week. Come help us recognize the creative talents of our youth by attending our Open House on Friday, May 7th from 12pm-5pm at the office on Portage Ave. We will be serving refreshments catered by the culinary students at Sturgeon-Heights Collegiate, and there will be a couple of door prizes as well. So come on down and support our youth! Looking for something to do with your child aged 0-6 years? Want to connect with other parents in your community? Drop in for free play and fun activities at our local Parent Child Centres. A snack will be provided. Come and be a K.W. senior! Kirkfield Westwood Community Center, located at 165 Sansome Avenue, holds meetings for seniors on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. This is the perfect opportunity to socialize and meet new people. There are card games and outing. For more information please contact Jessie Mackay at 889-1106. On June the 8, 2009, I introduced Bill 238 - The Service Animal Protection Act. The bill, the first of its kind in Canada, makes it an offence to interfere with a service animal or to allow other animals to do so without consent. After a year of hard work with community members from law enforcement and the disabilities community, I am pleased to announce that the bill has been passed and received Royal Assent on October 8 and is now law. For more information please follow this link. If you know of any events in the community that you would like to share, or have any ideas, concerns, or questions about government programs, please feel free to contact me. My Constituency Office is located at 3059 Portage Avenue and you can reach me at 832-2318 or by e-mail at kirkfieldpark@mts.net. |
